Chalki - Tragaia

In the centre of the island, at a distance of 16km far from Chora, it is located the verdant plain of Tragaia fully covered with olive trees. It is surrounded by the mountains of “Koronos” and “Fanari” from the north part and by the imposing “Zas” Mountain from the north-east part of the area. Thanks to its location Tragaia was always considered to be the commercial centre of mountainous Naxos. The villages of Tragaia, Chalki, Koutsocherado, Tsikalario, Kerami, Metochi, Kaloxylos, Monitsia (Rachi), Akadimoi, each one with its peculiarities and its own character but all of them close to each other, always considered as a unity.

The great history of Tragaia dates back to ancient times. Footpaths from Tsikalario and Koutsocherado lead to the Upper Castle that stands out in the central Naxos since antiquity. There is also the prehistoric wall that used to be the fortress of ancient Tragea while two ancient cemeteries of Geometric period still remain at the foot of it. There, you can also see a “Menchir”, which is an upright stone, a stone megalith monument of particular interest and beauty. The castle, which was used successively in Byzantine and Venetian period, is really astonishing: walls, embrasures, tanks, chapels, palaces compose a Medieval city that definitely compensates the visitor for the tiring hike.

Apollonas beach

Η παραλία Απόλλωνας της Νάξου είναι η όμορφη παραλία του ομώνυμου οικισμού που βρίσκεται στις βορειοανατολικές ακτές της Νάξου. Αμμουδερή με καταγάλανα νερά η παραλία Απόλλωνας και καλά προφυλαγμένη από τους νοτιάδες, προσφέρεται για κάθε γούστο. Στην παραλία Απόλλωνα λειτουργούν λίγες ταβέρνες και μερικά μικρομάγαζα, ενώ υπάρχει μικρή προβλήτα κυρίως για αλιευτικά και μικρά σκάφη.

Kourounochori

It is a small village located just opposite to Melanes, at a distance of 8km from Chora. It is built up high in the middle of the valley of Melanes. It has luxuriant vegetation and clear running water from the spring of Flerio that supplies the whole wide area. The residents are mostly farmers and moreover the village is known for the plants and flowers that cover all the courtyards and gardens of the local houses.

Kynidaros

Kynidaros was a community until 1998 that later became a settlement (local department) of Naxos municipality and it finally ended up to be a municipal community of Naxos and Small Cyclades municipality. It is located in the central and north-western part of the island at an altitude of 415,00m.

It is amphitheatrically built with a view to the noonday between the School (1936) of the settlement – which is surrounded by a coppice of pine trees (1970) and which is built on the highest part of the village in a specially formed artificial terrace – and the parish church of Agios Georgios (“Saint George” in 1842) located in the lowest part of the island respectively which adjoins the cemetery of the village from its south-eastern side located a little bit higher from a picturesque ravine with plane trees, oleanders and willows.

Sagri

This village is located in one of the most fertile areas of Naxos and at a distance of 11km far from the port. Its residents deal with agriculture and livestock farming especially of cow breeding. It is about one of the most important villages regarding sights since it has picturesque windmills, byzantine churches and Venetian castles, as well. Next to the byzantine church of Panagia Orfani (meaning Virgin Mary the Orphan) the Tower of Palaiologos is located. According to its coat of arms, it was built in 1699 and it is a renovated and still habitable tower.

Moreover, in the settlement you will meet the Monastery of Agios Elefterios, which was used as a secret school during the Ottoman Rule. Nowadays, it houses the Folk Art Museum. Walking on its narrow picturesque streets you will meet the hospitable local people along with small traditional cafιs and restaurants with homemade food and fine products of local origin. Enjoy a snack or a glass of wine along with the locals or other visitors who often make a stopover in Sagri.

Apeiranthos

Apeiranthos was a community until 1998 that later became a settlement (local department) of Drymalias municipality of Naxos and it finally ended up to be a municipal community of Naxos and Small Cyclades municipality. It is located in the northeastern part of the island that starts from an altitude of 550m in the area of “Lagkadi” and reaches the altitude of 650,00m in the region of “Psari Blaka”.

It is situated at the foot of “Fanari” Mountain and it is built in an amphitheatrical way so as to have a view to the southeastern part of the island. It consists of two big neighbours, “Firoistra” from north and “Katiforo” from south. It is 28km far from Chora, the island’s capital. Apeiranthos is about 80km2 long and it has about 1100 permanent residents (census of 2001).

The residents mainly deal with livestock farming, construction industry, trade and tourism and in a much smaller extent with agriculture, manufacturing and other home handicraft activities. Besides, they are famous for their mastery of the textile art, poetry and music.

Koronos

It is one of the biggest and most significant mountain villages of Naxos with a valuable tradition and history. It is located at a distance of 34km far from Chora in the northeastern part of the island. In the past its residents dealt with the mining of emery, of this mineral that gave glory and financial prosperity to the island.

It is worth going for a walk towards the bridge that will lead you to small traditional cafιs where raki and local snacks are served. There are also traditional restaurants where you can taste meat and cheese of excellent quality. Besides, the village is renowned for its products and it is considered to be the ideal destination for those who are looking for special gastronomic suggestions. Another unique experience can be a stroll towards the church of Agia Marina, which is surrounded by neat and tidy courtyards, cheerful and hospitable people. Moni

It is a mountain village in the centre of the island and at a distance of 20km far from Chora. It is built at an altitude of 500 metres with an astonishing view to the valley of Tragaia, Zas Mountain and the endless blue sea in the background. Its white houses compose a unique landscape with luxuriant vegetation all over and they are in a perfect match with Fanari Mountain.

Entering to the village you will meet the monument dedicated to the dead warriors of the village. You can park your car there and walk on the village’s narrow streets so as to see the stone buildings, for which local residents are so famous on the island, the main square and the small traditional cafιs.

Filoti

At a distance of 17km far from Chora the biggest village of Naxos is located, built between two verdant mountainsides. It is about the village with the greatest development after Chora and it has more than 2000 permanent residents. It is fully organized with administrative services, banks, post office, schools and public colleges of third degree education making it a real pole of attraction of the island.

ts residents mainly deal with livestock farming and some other activities such as building industry and tourism. The village is famous for its meat thanks to its animals’ free grazing way of breeding; having a lunch in one of its restaurants will definitely convince you for it. Filoti is full of life; young children run all over the streets while the locals are gathered together, particularly during summer, in the main square under the perennial plane tree that generously offers its shade.

Skado - Mesi

Skado It’s one of the smallest but very picturesque villages of Naxos at a distance of 38km far from the port. It is also one of the emery villages that once enjoyed great prosperity. Today the very few residents deal with agriculture and livestock farming.

Mesi, is a small picturesque village with really few permanent residents located between Apollonas and Skado and probably that explains why it is called Mesi, which means “middle”. In the past it was also one of the emery villages of Naxos. Nowadays, its very few residents deal with agriculture and livestock farming. The village has a perennial plane tree that is considered to be the centre of all cultural events such as feasts and festivals.

Potamia

At a distance of 8km from the port it is located the village of Potamia. It is one of the most beautiful villages of the island, built in a valley rich in vegetation. It consists of four settlements and it has about 360 permanent residents who mainly deal with agriculture and livestock farming. Its name comes from the rivers that cross the village which compose along with the springs this verdant oasis throughout the year.

It has 14 mills which once used by the locals to produce grains. In Ano Potamia (meaning “Upper Rivers”) there is still one in good condition. During the rule of Franks, the village enjoyed great prosperity which is obvious from the existence of many towers in the area. It is really worth walking on its narrow streets and among plants and trees you will meet the marble spring of “Faraksou”.

Galanado-Glinado

At a distance of 6km far from Chora in the southwestern part of the island the small village of Galanado is located. It is amphitheatrically built with an excellent view to the plain of Livadi and Chora too. It has about 400 permanent residents who mainly deal with agriculture and livestock farming. According to the tradition the name of the village comes from the French word “galant” which means gentleman.

At a short distance and in an outstanding position dominates the Tower of Belonia that overlooks the whole eastern side of Naxos. It is one of the best-preserved towers of the island and it continues to be a private residence. It dates from around 1610 when it belonged to Ieronimos Somarippa. In its courtyard it is located the double-aisled chapel of Agios Ioannis.

Glinado, It’s 6km from Chora situated on a hill in the southwestern part of the island and with an amphitheatrical view just like Galanado. It has about 500 permanent residents who mainly deal with agriculture (cultivation of potato) and livestock farming. The cultivation of potato is indissolubly related to the the history of the village. All around the settlement there are many new houses with an astonishing view to the sea thanks to the village’s perfect location. That’s why it is considered to be the balcony of Naxos!

Entering to the village you will see the church of Agios Nikodimos which is celebrated on 13th and 14th July with a big feast. On 5th and 6th August the residents organize also another feast in the honour of the Christ. You can have a real fun in the island’s traditional way. If you are there when the sun goes down, enjoy the spectacular scenery from the chapel of Tzanakos or the mill of Gareglas.
